Hiya! I’m Stephanie. I live in Greensboro, North Carolina with my husband, daughter and our two dogs. I was born in the Carter administration, but I still get carded trying to buy alcohol. I attribute this to the fact that I have the stature of a pre-pubescent tween; grey hair notwithstanding.

I earned a PhD in evolutionary biology in 2009, and then retired to become a stay-at-home-mom. It is exhausting, brain-numbing, and I am often envious of the shower-everyday-talk-to-adults-work-outside-the-home people. But being a stay-at-home-mom is also the best, most exhilarating and rewarding thing I’ve ever done. It’s also really fun sometimes. And I can do it in my pajamas. But this is rarely empowering.

The next biggest piece in my Awesome Pie is yarn. Which I realize sounds kinda lame, but I like to make it (on a spinning wheel) and knit it, and to be quite frank, it’s an amazing creative outlet for me. And it’s something I’m not half bad at. It can also be darn challenging (writing, altering and sometimes just reading a pattern can require math and problem solving skills like you wouldn’t believe), meditative (when not writing, altering or reading a difficult pattern), and reeeaalllly pretty. — oooh, a green thing! wuh?

One of my goals for 2012 is to turn a sheep into a sweater. That might also be one of my goals in 2013-2020, but to sheep, perchance to dream? (womp, womp.) Eventually, I want to have a page on here devoted to pictures of my handspun yarn, patterns I’ve written, things I’ve made, and things I drool over.

In the meantime, I have decided that I will undertake the substantial challenge of writing a sometimes-entertaining blog that does not find humor at the expense of others. Along with that irritatingly high-minded ideal, I will strive to keep this blog PG-90. My 90 year-old grandfather reads this blog approvingly, and I think that’s a good compass for what’s okay to post.

So that’s it for now.

Smooches!
